Check your application window

The window rule (3 months before the start, up to the last day) and the limit of 5 periods are from the Service Centre’s Applying and Basics pages. The checker does not check the other conditions, such as the credit check or the 312-week limit.

Who qualifies

You must meet all of these:

You are not eligible if you are a high school student, are registered as an apprentice in Quebec, are getting a Canada Student Loan for the same technical training, have been told you are restricted from Canada Apprentice Loans or Canada Student Loans, have already been funded for 5 periods of technical training, or have already used 312 weeks (6 years) of payment-free status.

How to apply

  1. Sign in or register at My Service Canada Account, then choose the Canada Apprentice Loan service.
  2. Apply online, and add your banking details to get the money faster.
  3. Agree to the terms and conditions and submit. You can follow the status in your online account.

You can also mail the paper application and agreement, as long as it and every supporting document are sent by the last day of your technical training.

When repayment starts

Repayment is triggered when any of these happens: you complete your Red Seal apprenticeship program; you stop being registered in one; you reach the lifetime maximum of 312 weeks (6 years) of payment-free status; or your registration is not confirmed by your Apprenticeship End Date. You then have a 6-month non-repayment period before regular payments start, and you can pay earlier if you want. Payments can be made by pre-authorized debit, cheque, online or telephone banking, or money order.

If payments are hard to make, the Repayment Assistance Plan can lower them, or bring them to zero, for 6 months at a time, and you can reapply. A loan with no payments for 270 days (9 months) goes to the Canada Revenue Agency for collection, so contact the Service Centre before that point.

Other support for apprentices

The loan is separate from grants and tax deductions. Journeypersons certified on or after April 1, 2025 can look at the $5,000 Red Seal Completion Bonus, and employed tradespeople who buy their own tools can look at the tradesperson’s tools deduction.

Working on a construction site far from home? The labour mobility deduction covers up to $4,000 a year of temporary lodging and travel for tradespeople and apprentices in construction.
