The 306A Plumber Red Seal exam is Canada's national certification for journeyperson plumbers working in residential, commercial, and industrial plumbing systems. Earning a Red Seal 306A endorsement means your knowledge of the National Plumbing Code of Canada (NPC), drainage systems, water supply, and gas piping is certified at the national level — giving you the freedom to work in any province without re-examination.

The exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) and aligned with the National Plumbing Code of Canada, with a passing score of 70%. Exam time is 4 hours.

• Drainage, Waste & Vent (DWV) Systems — The largest block. Pipe sizing using fixture unit method, trap requirements and trap arms, venting configurations (individual, circuit, wet, air admittance), grade/fall calculations for horizontal drains, and cleanout requirements per NPC.
• Water Supply Systems — Pipe sizing for hot and cold domestic water (Hunter's Method), pressure-reducing valves, backflow prevention (RP, DC, atmospheric vacuum breaker), water hammer arrestors, thermal expansion tanks, and cross-connection control.
• Fixtures & Appliances — Fixture clearances (NPC Table 7.4.1), accessible design requirements, water closet rough-in dimensions, shower/tub installation, dishwasher and laundry appliance connections, and trim selection.
• Gas Piping & Fuel Systems — Natural gas and propane piping sizing (CSA B149.1), appliance venting categories (I–IV), gas meter set sizing, CSST bonding requirements, pressure testing procedures, and shut-off valve placement.
• Plumbing Theory, Codes & Safety — NPC Section references, permit and inspection requirements, hydraulic principles (Bernoulli, head pressure, flow velocity), legionella prevention (thermal disinfection requirements), and WHMIS/PPE for plumbing chemicals.
• Storm Drainage & Special Systems — Roof drain sizing, sump pits, interceptors (grease, oil), sump pumps, and grey water recycling systems.

Exam Strategy for 306A

Fixture unit calculations are everywhere. DWV sizing using the fixture unit method appears in multiple questions. Know the fixture unit values for common fixtures (WC flush tank=4, lav=1, tub=1.5, kitchen sink=1.5) and the corresponding pipe sizes from the NPC hydraulic-load and pipe-sizing tables.

Venting rules are tricky. Candidates consistently lose marks on venting — specifically when wet venting is permitted, air admittance valve limitations, and common vent requirements. Master NPC Part 7 venting rules.

Gas piping is a bonus section. Many plumbers are less comfortable with gas than DWV. Since it's 15% of the exam, strong gas knowledge can easily push a borderline candidate over 70%.
