The 309A Construction Electrician Red Seal exam is the interprovincial Red Seal exam for construction electricians, whose electrical systems Red Seal describes as serving residential, agricultural, commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation and entertainment environments. Construction Electrician is designated Red Seal in all ten provinces and three territories, and Red Seal says the endorsement facilitates labour mobility.
The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions drawn from the 2021 Red Seal Occupational Standard, requiring a minimum score of 70%. Red Seal has published a newer (2025) standard for this trade, and exams based on it are under development (red-seal.ca, checked September 2026). Exam duration is up to 4 hours.
Red Seal publishes how the 100 questions on the real 309A exam are distributed across its Major Work Activities:
Every question is four-option multiple choice with one correct answer, the writing time is four hours and the pass mark is 70%. Source: 309A exam information, red-seal.ca. The new 2025 standard's examination weightings, which will apply to the exams now under development, move questions toward wiring systems (34%, up from 30%) and away from motors and control systems (18%, down from 21%) (red-seal.ca, checked September 2026). Check both pages before you book.
These are the topic areas in this practice bank and what each one covers. The real 309A exam has 100 questions and a four-hour writing time. How those questions are distributed across the official blocks is published by Red Seal — see the 309A exam information page.
Know your Code tables. Practise table lookups — ampacity tables, conduit fill charts, demand factor tables. SkilledTradesBC supplies the 2024 CEC at the sitting (checked October 2026); confirm with your apprenticeship authority what you will have. Either way, know these tables well enough to find and apply them quickly.
Master box fill calculations. CEC Rule 12-3034 works from a conductor count, not a volume for each item: a box of the nominal dimensions listed in Table 23 may hold no more conductors of a given size than that table allows, less one for each fixture stud or hickey, one for every pair of conductor connectors with insulating caps and two for each flush-mounted device on a single strap. Table 22 (usable space per conductor) is used for boxes not listed in Table 23 or holding conductors of different sizes.
Three-phase calculations. Know the formulas for balanced 3-phase loads (P = √3 × V × I × PF), transformer kVA sizing, and line vs. phase voltage relationships.
This tool provides 131 questions across all CEC topic areas with full explanations for every answer. Use Topic Filter to drill calculation-heavy sections first. The Mock Exam runs timed 25-, 50- or 75-question sessions drawn from every topic in this practice bank (the official exam breakdown is shown above). Track your accuracy per topic with the Topic Progress Panel.

The Red Seal 309A Construction Electrician interprovincial exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions. SkilledTradesBC allows up to 4 hours and sets the pass mark at 70%. The interprovincial exam is written to both the 2021 and 2024 CEC (SkilledTradesBC OPSN 2025 003). Formulas and acronyms are provided at the exam sitting, and SkilledTradesBC has provided the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code to Construction Electrician candidates since June 1, 2025 (checked October 2026). Confirm with your apprenticeship authority what you will have.
Red Seal does not publish how often individual CEC rules are tested: its 309A exam information counts questions by task, not by code rule. The largest tasks are raceways, conductors, cables and enclosures and branch circuitry and devices (9 questions each), then motor starters and controls (8). The exam is compliant with both the 2021 and 2024 CEC (SkilledTradesBC OPSN 2025 003). Rules this site's 309A questions use include Rule 8-104 (maximum circuit loading, including the limit on continuous loads), Rule 12-012 (direct buried conductors, cables and raceways must meet the minimum cover in Table 53), Rule 26-704 (Class A GFCI protection for 5-15R and 5-20R receptacles within 1.5 m of sinks, bathtubs or shower stalls, and outdoors within 2.5 m of finished grade) and, for motors, Rule 28-106 with Table 27 (conductor ampacity) and Rule 28-200 with Table 29 (branch-circuit overcurrent protection).
The 309A exam is not simply closed book. You cannot bring your own materials, but Red Seal lists the acronym list, math formulas, any code book information the exam requires, and a calculator if needed among the supplies provided, and SkilledTradesBC provides the 2024 Canadian Electrical Code (checked October 2026). Confirm with your apprenticeship authority what is supplied. Red Seal's Exam Preparation Guide notes that procedural and application questions might include calculations and interpretations of diagrams or code books.
