About the Red Seal Gasfitter — Class A Exam

Where this applies: Gasfitter — Class A carries a Red Seal endorsement in most provinces (examined through jurisdictions such as BC, Alberta and Manitoba). In Ontario and Saskatchewan the Red Seal gasfitter endorsement is not recognized: Ontario licenses gas work through TSSA (Gas Technician G3/G2/G1) and Saskatchewan through TSASK/SATCC (General/Domestic Gas Fitter). This question bank covers the Red Seal (CSA B149.1-based) scope, which overlaps heavily with the TSSA G2/G1 and TSASK material.

Red Seal does not currently publish a question count for this exam — new exams built on the updated occupational standard are under development. Exam time is 4 hours.

What this question bank covers

These are the topic areas in this practice bank and what each one covers. Red Seal does not currently publish a question count for this exam — the trade's exams are being rewritten to a new standard. How those questions are distributed across the official blocks is published by Red Seal — see the Gasfitter (Class A) exam information page.

What Red Seal publishes for Gasfitter Class A

Unlike the other trades on this site, Red Seal does not currently publish a question count or block breakdown for the Gasfitter (Class A) exam — the trade’s exams are being rewritten to an updated occupational standard. Study the whole standard rather than chasing a weighting, and check the trade page at red-seal.ca before you book.

Every question is four-option multiple choice with exactly one correct answer, and the pass mark is 70%. Expect an applied exam: roughly 50–60% of questions are procedural and application style and another 25–35% are critical thinking, with only 10–20% straight knowledge and recall. Controls, installation, commissioning and appliance service together account for almost three-quarters of the paper, so hands-on installation and service judgement matters more than memorized definitions.
