The 456A Welder Red Seal exam is the interprovincial Red Seal exam for welders, who are employed by companies that manufacture structural steel and platework, boilers, heavy machinery, aircraft and ships and other metal products, and by welding contractors and welding shops, or are self-employed. The Welder trade is designated Red Seal in all ten provinces and three territories, and Red Seal says the endorsement facilitates labour mobility.
The exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), with a passing score of 70%. Exam time is 4 hours.

Theory, not technique. Study the WHY — why you choose a specific polarity, why porosity occurs, why pre-heat is required — not just how to weld.

The 456A Red Seal Welder exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark is 70%, which is 88 correct answers; SkilledTradesBC rounds results up from 69.5%, so 87 correct also passes there.

Red Seal's 456A exam information does not publish a pass rate or a difficulty rating. It gives the mix of question types: 40 to 50% knowledge and recall, 35 to 45% procedural and application, and 10 to 20% critical thinking (interpreting data and solving problems). The largest blocks are welding processes (54 of the 125 questions) and layout and fabrication of components for welding (28). The pass mark is 70%.
In the AWS classification E7018, E means electrode, 70 is the tensile strength in ksi (70,000 psi), 1 means all-position welding and 8 identifies the type of coating and current: an iron powder low-hydrogen coating, run on AC or DCEP. Moisture can cause porosity and hydrogen-induced cracking, so low-hydrogen electrodes are stored as the manufacturer recommends, which may mean a storage oven.
