What the 456A question bank covers, topic by topic
The free PDF is a 50-question slice of a 125-question pool built around the occupational
standard topic areas for the Welder trade. Here is how those 125 are distributed, what each
area asks about, and where apprentices reliably drop marks.
- GMAW — 25 questions
The largest block. Transfer modes, shielding gas choice, wire classification, contact tip
to work distance, and the machine side — inductance, constant-voltage output, wire feed
speed versus voltage. The usual miss: welders know spray transfer exists but cannot say
which combination of current, wire diameter and gas reaches it. Cold lap, birdnesting and
burn-back each have one most-likely cause, and the question wants that one.
- SMAW — 24 questions
Electrode classification is the backbone: reading E7018 digit by digit, why E6010 digs and
E6013 suits thin sheet, why low-hydrogen rods live in an oven. Then heat control — preheat,
interpass temperature, carbon equivalent — and named defects: undercut, slag inclusion,
crater cracking, arc blow. Hood time on 7018 does not rescue you here, because the exam
asks why rather than how.
- GTAW — 20 questions
Tungsten selection, tip grind and grind direction, polarity logic (DCEN for steel, AC for
aluminum), post-flow, gas lenses and back-purging on pipe. The defects are visual: tungsten
contamination, sugaring on a stainless root, soot around the puddle. The common slip is the
AC balance control — apprentices describe cleaning action fine but cannot say which way to
move the balance to get more of it.
- Safety & Tools — 17 questions
Confined-space entry order, lens shade by process and amperage, oxygen and fuel gas
cylinder separation, ventilation minimums, and the hazards that give no warning — argon and
CO2 are heavier than air and pool in pits until they displace oxygen. These look
like easy marks, which is why they go missing: many are sequence questions, where a true
answer in the wrong position still scores zero.
- OFC (oxy-fuel cutting) — 13 questions
The mechanism first: OFC preheats steel to kindling temperature, then oxidizes it with a
high-pressure oxygen jet. It burns the steel; it does not melt it. Around that sit flame
settings, tip selection, pressures, travel speed and drag lines. Many apprentices answer
that the preheat flame does the cutting, and that one error cascades through every question
about pressure and speed.
- FCAW — 12 questions
The self-shielded versus gas-shielded split drives most of this area: why FCAW-S runs
outdoors in wind and FCAW-G does not, the polarity each takes, and why electrical stickout
is longer than with solid wire. Decoding E71T-1 does the job E7018 does in SMAW.
- Theory — 14 questions
The weld-quality and paperwork content that belongs to no single process: WPS versus PQR,
what a root bend test reveals about ductility and soundness, which positions a 3G plate
qualification carries, stringer versus weave. Most people skip this in self-study because
it is not hood time, and it is disproportionately where marks are left behind.
Getting real information out of the 50 questions
A mock exam is a diagnostic, not a study session. Looking up an answer the moment you feel
unsure hides the exact gap you were hunting for.
Sit all 50 in one block with a clock running, no notes and no welding handbook. Answer
everything. As you go, put a dot in the margin beside any question you guessed — including
the ones you guessed correctly. That second group is what apprentices throw away, and it is
the group that collapses under exam pressure.
Then study only the misses, sorted by topic rather than in question order. Four wrong in
GMAW and three in FCAW is not seven problems; it is one gap in wire-fed process variables,
and closing it clears all seven. If the misses cluster in Theory and Safety & Tools
instead, the issue is usually reading rather than welding knowledge — noticing that the
question asked for a sequence, or for the most likely cause.
Read the explanations only after you have committed to an answer on paper, then retake the
same 50 cold a few days later.

Where Welder certification fits, and how these questions map to it
Welder is a Red Seal designated trade in all thirteen provinces and territories. In Ontario
it is administered under trade code 456A, which is where this PDF's name comes from;
elsewhere the same trade carries a different code or none at all. The standard behind it is
national, so a question on transfer modes or electrode classification is equally valid
wherever you are apprenticing.
What differs by jurisdiction is administration — required hours, in-school blocks, when you
become eligible to write. That is why this page prints no question count, time limit or
passing mark for the certification exam: those figures are set by the authority that issues
your certificate, they differ between jurisdictions, and they change. Your provincial or
territorial apprenticeship authority is the only source worth trusting on them.
The questions map to the topic structure above, in the multiple-choice, single-best-answer
format used for trade knowledge testing. This is independent study material: it carries no
credit, satisfies no apprenticeship requirement, and working through it does not lead to a
Red Seal endorsement — that comes from your jurisdiction once you meet its requirements.
Questions welders ask about this PDF
- Are these the real exam questions?
No. Every question is original, written in the style and format used for trade knowledge
exams. Live exam banks are secure and nobody publishes them — a resource claiming to hand
you the actual questions is either mistaken or lying.
- I am not in Ontario. Is a "456A" PDF still useful?
Yes. 456A is only Ontario's trade code for Welder, and Welder is Red Seal designated in
every province and territory against one national standard. Nothing in the GMAW, SMAW,
GTAW, FCAW, OFC or theory content is Ontario-specific.
- Does this cover the hands-on test?
No — written knowledge only. Weld tests and position qualification are assessed separately,
and no amount of multiple choice replaces time under the hood. Some theory does overlap
usefully: position qualification ranges, WPS interpretation, defect identification.
