What Is the Red Seal Program?

The Red Seal Program (formally the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program) sets common standards to assess the skills of tradespeople across Canada. A Red Seal endorsement on your Certificate of Qualification shows that you passed the Red Seal exam and have the knowledge the national standard for your trade requires. Which provinces and territories designate a trade as Red Seal depends on the trade: all 13 for eight of the 11 trades on this site, 11 for Gasfitter – Class A, 10 for Industrial Electrician and 7 for Ironworker (Generalist) (red-seal.ca).

The Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) is responsible for the program, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) sponsors its secretariat, and each province and territory administers it, including the Red Seal exams, in its own jurisdiction. The official list on red-seal.ca has 54 Red Seal trades (checked October 2026).

Why the Red Seal Matters

How the Red Seal Exam Works

Red Seal exams have 100 to 150 multiple-choice questions depending on the trade (100 to 135 for the 11 trades on this site; red-seal.ca), based on the trade's Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) — the national document that defines what a journeyperson in that trade must know. The pass mark is 70% and the writing time is four hours (Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide).

The RSOS is updated every few years to reflect changes in technology, regulations, and industry practice. This site's practice questions are written against each trade's current RSOS — for example the 2022 RSOS for Truck and Transport Mechanic and the 2023 RSOS for Heavy Duty Equipment Technician and Automotive Service Technician.

How to Register for the Red Seal Exam

The Red Seal exam is administered provincially — you apply through your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority, not directly to the federal government. The general process is:

  1. Complete your apprenticeship hours and in-school training periods in your province.
  2. Apply to write the journeyperson exam through your provincial authority (Apprenticeship and Industry Training in Alberta, SkilledTradesBC, Skilled Trades Ontario, etc.).
  3. Pass the provincial exam — in most provinces this IS the Red Seal exam, not a separate test.
  4. Red Seal endorsement is added to your Certificate of Qualification automatically upon passing.
