The full 308A bank is 120 questions across six topic areas. Sheet metal is unusual in how much of it is drawing and calculating rather than recalling. Each area, and what apprentices consistently get wrong:
Sheet Metal Fabrication — 24 questions. Gauge and material selection, bend and seam allowances, brake and shear work, seam types — Pittsburgh, grooved, standing, drive cleat — stiffening by cross-breaking and beading, and mechanical fastening. Bend allowance is where the marks go: apprentices work to the outside dimension and forget that the neutral axis shifts with thickness and bend radius, so a stretch-out that is close on light gauge is well out on heavier stock. The other costly habit is picking a seam by shop habit when the question asks which one suits the pressure class.
Layout & Pattern Development — 20 questions. Parallel line, radial line and triangulation development; true length lines; square-to-round transitions; offsets; elbow gores and throat radius. The biggest source of lost marks is choosing the wrong development method — parallel line only works when the elements are parallel, radial line needs a common apex, everything else has to be triangulated. Second is true length: apprentices take a line off a foreshortened view, step it onto the pattern, and it will not close.
HVAC Systems — 27 questions. Duct sizing and static pressure, equal friction against static regain, fitting loss, dampers, air balancing, insulation and vapour barrier placement, and where duct leakage class matters. The classic error is treating a fitting's loss as just its length — a hard ninety with no turning vanes can cost more pressure than the straight run it sits in. Balancing questions get missed when the answer reaches for fan speed instead of terminals and dampers.
Welding & Joining — 20 questions. Soldering and brazing on light gauge, spot and tack welding, GMAW on thin material, filler and flux selection, distortion control, and joining with rivets and screws. Distortion is the recurring loss: heat input, sequence and clamping are what keep a panel flat, and any answer amounting to "more heat, move faster" is usually wrong. Solder against braze is the other mix-up — the dividing line is the filler's melting point and whether the base metal melts, not how strong the joint looks.
Safety & Code — 15 questions. Cut hazards from sheared edges, fall protection on roof and deck, lockout, WHMIS, and the standards governing duct construction, fire and smoke dampers, and clearance to combustibles. Fire damper questions are missed most often, because the requirement follows the rating of the assembly the duct passes through, not the duct itself.
Tools & Equipment — 14 questions. Shears, brakes, rolls, notchers, turning machines, plasma and track-mounted cutting, hand seamers and layout tools. The smallest block and the cheapest to shore up, because nearly all misses are setup and maintenance: brake radius and clamping pressure, roll adjustment, blade clearance on a shear.
Sit it timed, in one go, with nothing open — the first pass exists to show what you know cold. Mark a dot beside every question you guessed at, including the confident guesses.
Score it twice: the count you got wrong, then the count you got right with a dot beside it. The second number is the more honest one. Put both in one pile and sort by topic.
The 308A mix makes what comes next unusually clear. Just over 40% of the bank — Fabrication plus Layout & Pattern Development — is work done with a pencil, a rule and a calculator, not work you recall. If the misses land there, do not just re-read the explanation: redraw the development on scrap, step the true lengths off yourself, and check whether your pattern closes. That is the only review that transfers. HVAC Systems misses are chart and table problems instead, so work them with a friction chart open until finding the value stops being the slow part. Welding, Safety and Tools misses are single facts; flashcards clear them.

On the Sheet Metal Worker examination weightings page, the interprovincial exam is described as 120 questions across five Major Work Activities: installing air and material handling systems at 34%, fabrication at 28%, common occupational skills at 21%, roofing and specialty products at 10%, and maintenance and repair at 7%. The Red Seal exam preparation guide gives the format as multiple choice, four options, one correct answer worth one mark, four hours of writing time, and a pass mark of 70%. Provincial and territorial authorities administer it, so check the details for your jurisdiction.
These figures are current as of August 2026. Red Seal has published a new occupational standard for this trade and exams built on it are under development, so the question count and the weightings will change once those exams come into use. Check the trade page at red-seal.ca before you book.
Two honest notes on how our bank lines up. The published standard folds layout and pattern development into fabrication and common skills while we pull it out as its own block — same content, different label. And roofing and specialty products carries 10% there but gets only light coverage here, mostly inside the Fabrication questions, so study it elsewhere if architectural metal is your daily work.
Do I need drawing tools to work through it? A calculator and a pencil covers most of it. The Layout & Pattern Development questions are answered by reasoning about method and geometry, not by drawing a finished pattern — but keep dividers, a square and scrap handy and develop a few properly.
Is it imperial or metric? Both, because both are still in daily use in Canadian sheet metal shops — gauge and inches on stock and fittings, metric on plenty of drawings. Moving between them without stalling is part of the skill.
How is 308A different from the HVAC trades? Sheet metal work centres on making and installing the metal: developing patterns, forming, seaming, hanging and sealing duct. Refrigeration and air conditioning trades centre on the equipment, refrigerant circuits and controls.
