Where the 139 questions sit — and what trips apprentices up
The free PDF pulls 50 questions from the same 139-question 310S bank, so the balance below is
roughly what you will see. Each area lists what it covers and where marks get lost.
- Brakes — 28 questions
Hydraulic fundamentals and pedal diagnosis, master cylinders and proportioning, disc and drum
service, brake fluid specification, and the wheel-speed inputs an anti-lock system depends on.
Two errors repeat: quoting the minimum thickness stamped on a rotor as the machine-to figure,
when it is the discard dimension; and calling every ABS lamp a failed module, when a sensor
circuit, a damaged tone ring or a chafed harness is far more likely. Fluid questions expect you
to know why DOT 5 silicone does not belong in a DOT 3 or DOT 4 system.
- Engine — 27 questions
Four-stroke operation, valve train and timing, cooling and lubrication, fuel delivery, forced
induction, emission control, and the reasoning behind common trouble codes. The classic miss is
reading a lean code as "replace the oxygen sensor" — the sensor is reporting honestly, and the
real fault is unmetered air or not enough fuel volume. The second is not being able to say what
a compression test tells you that a leak-down test does not: one gives a number, the other tells
you where the air is going.
- Electrical — 27 questions
Ohm's law applied to real circuits, series and parallel behaviour, relay and switch control
logic, starting and charging tests, parasitic draw, meter and scope technique, and module
communication over the data bus. The most common error is taking a resistance reading where the
fault calls for a voltage-drop test under load — a corroded terminal reads a fraction of an ohm
cold and still drops two volts carrying current.
- Transmission and driveline — 25 questions
Automatic transmission hydraulics, planetary gear sets and ratio reasoning, torque converter
lock-up, clutch release, transfer cases, differentials, universal and CV joints, and driveline
angle. Apprentices blame every shudder on converter lock-up
when driveline angle, a tired U-joint or a misfire under load gives the same complaint. Fluid
questions are marks people give away: transmission fluids are not generic, and the wrong one
changes friction characteristics and shift quality.
- Suspension and steering — 22 questions
Alignment angles, springs, struts and dampers, bushings and control arms, wheel bearings,
rack-and-pinion and recirculating-ball steering, power assist, tire wear patterns and pressure
monitoring. The recurring confusion is which angles wear tires: toe
and camber do, caster does not on its own — it is a stability and steering-return angle. A pull
is more often unequal camber than caster, and a feathered edge points at toe.
- Heating and air conditioning — 10 questions
The smallest block, and the cheapest marks to collect: component function, pressure-temperature
relationships, recovery and charging practice, blend-door and airflow control, and the electrical
side of climate control. Where people slip is assuming every weak-cooling complaint is a low
charge, when a stuck blend door, a plugged cabin filter or a dead condenser fan gives the
customer the same symptom.
How to actually use 50 questions
Red Seal allows four hours for the 125-question Automotive Service Technician examination — a
shade under two minutes a question. Set a 95-minute timer, sit all 50 in one go, and keep the
manuals shut. Put a small G beside every answer you were not sure of, including the ones
you narrowed to two and picked.
When you mark it, count a guessed-right answer as a miss. It is not knowledge yet. Then
tally the misses by topic, not by question number: one wrong answer in HVAC means little, but
four wrong in the brake questions is a pattern worth a weekend. Brakes, engine and electrical are
82 of the 139 questions in the full bank, so misses clustered there are where the effort pays.
Read only the explanations for the ones you got wrong, then re-sit the same 50 cold a week later.
The second score is the one that means something.
What the 310S exam is built from
The exam is built from the Red Seal Occupational Standard for Automotive Service Technician
published at red-seal.ca,
not from any textbook. Red Seal states the interprovincial examination for this trade has 125
questions, the writing time is four hours, the pass mark is 70%, and every question is multiple
choice with four choices and one correct answer.
The standard divides the trade into major work activities with a published weighting for each.
The heaviest is steering, suspension, braking and control systems, tires, hubs and wheel bearings
at 19%, then electrical and comfort control systems at 18% and engine and engine support systems
at 17%. That is why this bank leans on brakes, electrical and engine.
Our six topic areas are study groupings, not the official major work activities — module
communication, restraint and body systems, and hybrid and electric vehicle systems carry their
own weightings, so read the published standard alongside any practice set. Eligibility and
booking are set by your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority.

- Are these the real 310S exam questions?
No. Every question here is original, written against the topic areas of the occupational
standard. Live exam questions are secure and are written and reviewed by tradespeople through
the Red Seal Program.
- Why are there nearly three times as many brake questions as HVAC questions?
Because the trade standard weights them that way. Braking, steering and suspension carry the
largest single share of the exam, while comfort control is one part of a broader electrical
activity.
- I work at a dealership on one make. Is that enough?
The exam covers the trade as practised across Canada, not the vehicles in your bay. If your shop
never sees a manual transmission, a transfer case or a drum brake, those are exactly the
questions to test yourself on.
- Can I use a calculator?
The Red Seal exam preparation guide lists a calculator among the supplies provided if one is
needed, along with the exam booklet, reference material where required, and a bubble sheet.
