The 406-question bank, area by area
At 421 questions this is the largest bank on the site, roughly triple most trades here, because the trade's
scope runs from a diesel injector to a high-voltage battery pack. Here is how those 421 divide, and where
marks go missing.
- Diesel Engine — 62 questions
Four-stroke theory, air intake and charge air, common rail and HEUI fuel systems, injector operation and
cylinder cut-out testing, valve lash, cooling and lubrication, and aftertreatment — EGR, DPF regeneration,
DEF and SCR. Aftertreatment is where marks disappear: a derate gets answered as a mechanical failure when
the fault is a sensor or DEF quality, and low-power causes get guessed rather than split into air, fuel and
back pressure.
- Hydraulic Systems — 61 questions
Gear, vane and piston pumps, load-sensing and pressure-compensated circuits, directional and relief valves,
counterbalance valves and pilot-operated checks, cylinders, motors, accumulators and filtration. Two things
recur: counterbalance function on a boom that drifts down, and schematics — reading a dashed pilot line as
a working line changes the answer.
- Electrical Systems — 60 questions
Series and parallel circuits, battery state of charge and load testing, charging and starting systems,
relays, sensors, wiring diagrams and J1939 multiplexed networks. The habit that costs marks is a resistance
check where a live test belongs — voltage drop under load finds the corroded connection an ohmmeter calls
good.
- Powertrain — 44 questions
Clutches, torque converters, powershift and hydrostatic transmissions, differentials and final drives,
driveshafts and planetary gear sets. Planetary questions are the ones people re-read three times: which
member is held, which drives, which outputs, which way it turns. Stall-test interpretation runs second.
- Brakes & Steering — 46 questions
Air brake systems, wet-disc and oil-cooled service brakes, spring-applied parking brakes, accumulators in
brake circuits, articulated steering, orbital steering units and cylinders. Technicians who learned brakes
on a highway truck carry over assumptions that do not hold — an oil-cooled brake pack is nothing like an
S-cam foundation brake.
- Safety & Tools — 25 questions
Lockout, blocking and cribbing a machine, stored energy in accumulators and suspensions, articulation-joint
locks, hoisting components, WHMIS, torque procedure and precision measuring tools. The one that catches
people is discharging a hydraulic accumulator before opening the circuit.
- HVAC & Cab Comfort — 29 questions
The refrigeration cycle, refrigerant handling and recovery, compressors and clutches, thermal expansion
valve versus orifice tube systems, cab heaters and cab filtration. Gauge diagnosis is the sticking point:
the pattern for a restriction gets answered as an overcharge.
- Structures & Attachments — 30 questions
Frames and undercarriage, booms, sticks and buckets, pins and bushings, wear parts and ground engaging
tools, couplers, crack inspection. Marks go on wear measurement limits and on repair sequence — preheat and
welding procedure on high-strength steel are not eyeball work.
- Hybrid & Electric Equipment — 25 questions
High-voltage safety and PPE, isolation and de-energizing procedure, orange cable identification, battery
packs and thermal management, motor-generators and regenerative systems. Twenty-five questions most people skip —
procedure recall, the cheapest marks here.
- Preventive Maintenance — 24 questions
Service intervals, fluid and filter specification, greasing and scheduled oil sampling. The one real skill
is reading an oil analysis report — knowing which wear metal points at which component.
Getting a real reading out of 50 questions
The Red Seal exam for this trade runs 135 questions in a four-hour writing time — under two minutes each.
Sit the 50 in 90 minutes, closed book, and read the result as a diagnosis.
- Answer the question, do not fix the machine
The occupational habit here is to keep diagnosing. Exam questions ask one thing — the next step, the likely
cause, the correct spec — and technicians talk themselves out of the right answer by adding conditions the
question never gave.
- Dot every answer you guessed, as you go
On a bank this wide you will guess in the systems you rarely touch, and a lucky guess hides that gap.
- Score by area, not by total
Forty out of fifty means nothing on its own. Ten misses all in hydraulics is a week of schematics; ten
spread evenly across ten areas is a pace problem, and the fix is timed practice, not theory.
- Then study only the misses and the dots
Read the explanation in the back, then redraw the circuit or the power flow by hand. Schematic and
diagnostic-sequence questions repay drawing; recall items do not.

The Red Seal Program publishes the breakdown for this trade: 135 questions across nine blocks —

Its Exam Preparation Guide states four choices per question with one correct answer, a 70% pass mark and a
four-hour writing time.

What 421A apprentices ask
- Why is the 421A bank so much bigger than the other trades here?
Because the scope is. One technician works across diesel engines, hydraulics, electronics, drivetrain,
brakes, HVAC, structures and now high-voltage systems. At 120 questions whole systems would go untested.
- Does it cover on-highway trucks?
No. The questions stay on off-road equipment — excavators, dozers, loaders, graders and the engines and
drivetrains in them. Highway truck material belongs to the truck and transport trade; if that is your work,
the 310T quiz is the right one.
- Do I need air brake knowledge for this?
Air brakes are in the bank because the trade covers them, alongside oil-cooled brakes highway work never
touches. Whether your province also requires a separate air brake certificate is a question for your
apprenticeship authority.
- Only nine hybrid and electric questions — worth studying?
Yes, and they are the easiest nine here. Isolation, PPE and cable identification are procedure recall rather
than diagnosis, and the block appears on the official breakdown too.
