How to register for your Red Seal exam in every province — fees, steps, and contacts.
There is no national registration desk: the Red Seal exam is always booked through your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority. The process — and the fee — differs by jurisdiction, but the shape is the same everywhere. Two pathways lead to the same interprovincial exam: completing an apprenticeship, or proving enough verified work experience as a trade qualifier / challenger (each jurisdiction sets the experience it requires; see the challenger rules by province below).

Waivers are time-limited government programs — always confirm they're still active when you apply.
Rewrite: same fee per attempt. C of Q renewal (compulsory trades): $60 + HST a year. Experienced workers: Trade Equivalency Assessment $235 + HST; if you pass the exam, a separate fee is charged to issue the C of Q. Skilled Trades Ontario, checked September 2026.

SkilledTradesBC →Application includes the first theory attempt; theory rewrite $100; a third attempt needs 60%+ on an earlier attempt and an approved training plan (max 3 attempts per application). If you hold a trade certificate Alberta recognizes (Recognized Credential program): $150 application, $50 rewrite. Practical exams, where required, cost extra (e.g., Welder $160). Challenger rule: per-trade months + hours, generally ~1.5× the apprenticeship term.
Alberta Tradesecrets →Trade qualifiers pay the $400 assessment, then $175 for every written exam attempt, including the first (practical exams, where required, are also $175). Most apprentices write the first certification exam at the end of final-level training with no fee; later attempts are $175. Trade qualifiers get up to 4 written attempts (2 if not a citizen or permanent resident), with 3 months before the second. SATCC fee schedule as of July 2, 2025, checked September 2026.
Challenger rule: full-time trade hours verified per trade (published on each trade's page).
SATCC →Re-examination $100. Registered apprentices write free. Processing up to 8 weeks via AccessManitoba.
Challenger rule: minimum years AND hours AND experience across ≥70% of the trade's scope (per trade).
Apprenticeship Manitoba →Construction trades run through the CCQ; other regulated trades through the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale. With a certificate from either body you apply to the Ministère and write the Red Seal exam at its exam centre: $330 including the certificate, rewrite $330, or $352 if you are CCQ-certified (Ministère fee schedule, January 2026). The CCQ's own provincial qualification exam costs $100 (CCQ, checked September 2026).
Challenger rule (CCQ): proven hours at least equal to the trade's apprenticeship duration (1.0×).

Registration is handled by your provincial apprenticeship authority. You must first complete the required hours of on-the-job training and/or your apprenticeship program, then apply through your province's trade certification body. The process varies slightly by province but generally involves submitting proof of hours, paying the exam fee, and booking a time slot at an authorized testing center.
You must bring: (1) valid government-issued photo ID (driver's licence or passport), (2) your exam booking confirmation or authorization number, and (3) a non-programmable calculator if permitted for your trade. No phones, smartwatches, notes, or reference materials are allowed in the exam room.
Exam fees vary widely by province — from $0 to more than $500 CAD. Newfoundland and Labrador eliminated all apprentice and trade-qualifier exam fees in April 2025, and Ontario waives the first attempt for apprentices completing their program from 2025 onward. Typical fees elsewhere: Ontario $150+HST, BC $120 (challenge application), Alberta $450 (Trades Qualifier – Work Experience application; Alberta Tradesecrets, checked September 2026), Saskatchewan $400 trade-qualifier assessment plus $175 per written exam (SATCC fee schedule, checked September 2026), Manitoba $400 (trade qualifier exam), New Brunswick $250, Nova Scotia $350. Confirm current pricing with your provincial apprenticeship authority.
If you fail, you can retake the exam after a waiting period set by your province or territory: Skilled Trades Ontario and SkilledTradesBC both require a 30-day wait after a failed attempt. SkilledTradesBC's results letter gives your mark on each topic area; check what your own authority's report shows and use it to identify weak areas to study. Rewrite fees vary by jurisdiction — Newfoundland and Labrador, for example, has charged no exam or rewrite fees since April 1, 2025 (gov.nl.ca, checked September 2026).
Quebec is one of the thirteen provincial and territorial jurisdictions in the Red Seal Program, but its trade certification is administered differently. Construction trades are regulated by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) and other regulated trades run through their own provincial bodies, so the route to a Red Seal endorsement in Quebec is not the same as elsewhere. Confirm the current process with the Quebec authority for your trade.
