How to register for your Red Seal exam in every province — fees, steps, and contacts.
There is no national registration desk: the Red Seal exam is always booked through your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority. The process — and the fee — differs by jurisdiction, but the shape is the same everywhere. Two pathways lead to the same interprovincial exam: completing an apprenticeship, or proving enough verified work experience as a trade qualifier / challenger (most jurisdictions require 1.0–1.5× the apprenticeship's hours).
Waivers are time-limited government programs — always confirm they're still active when you apply.
Rewrite: same fee per attempt. C of Q issuance $60. Experienced workers: Trade Equivalency Assessment $235.

Apprenticeship Manitoba →Construction trades run through the CCQ; other regulated trades through Emploi-Québec (confirm current tariffs). Québec is a Red Seal jurisdiction, but the certification route runs through these provincial bodies rather than the interprovincial process used elsewhere.

Registration is handled by your provincial apprenticeship authority. You must first complete the required hours of on-the-job training and/or your apprenticeship program, then apply through your province's trade certification body. The process varies slightly by province but generally involves submitting proof of hours, paying the exam fee, and booking a time slot at an authorized testing center.
You must bring: (1) valid government-issued photo ID (driver's licence or passport), (2) your exam booking confirmation or authorization number, and (3) a non-programmable calculator if permitted for your trade. No phones, smartwatches, notes, or reference materials are allowed in the exam room.
Exam fees vary widely by province — from $0 to about $400 CAD. Newfoundland and Labrador eliminated all apprentice and trade-qualifier exam fees in April 2025, Ontario waives the first attempt for apprentices completing their program from 2025 onward, and Nova Scotia has waived trade-qualifier fees for construction trades until October 2026. Typical fees elsewhere: Ontario $150+HST, BC $120 (challenge application), Alberta $150, Manitoba $400 (trade qualifier exam), New Brunswick $250, Nova Scotia $350. Confirm current pricing with your provincial apprenticeship authority.
If you fail, you can retake the exam after a waiting period that varies by province (usually 30–90 days). You will receive a result showing your performance by block/topic, which helps you identify weak areas to study. You must re-register and pay the exam fee again.
Quebec is one of the thirteen provincial and territorial jurisdictions in the Red Seal Program, but its trade certification is administered differently. Construction trades are regulated by the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) and other regulated trades run through their own provincial bodies, so the route to a Red Seal endorsement in Quebec is not the same as elsewhere. Confirm the current process with the Quebec authority for your trade.
