Red Seal Exam Format 2026: Questions, Time Limits & What to Expect

The Red Seal exam is a multiple-choice certification test administered at authorized testing centres across Canada. You can't bring your own notes or reference books; any reference material the exam allows is provided. Whether you're writing the 421A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician exam or the 309A Construction Electrician exam, the format follows the same structure — but the question count and topic weighting differ by trade, and Red Seal's Exam Preparation Guide gives the writing time as four hours.

This guide covers everything: how many questions each trade has, how long you have to complete them, what the pass mark is, how the computer-based testing works, and what happens if you don't pass.

Red Seal Exam Format by Trade — At a Glance

Min. Correct is the fewest correct answers that reach 70%; SkilledTradesBC rounds results up from 69.5%, so 94 correct on a 135-question exam and 87 on a 125-question exam also pass there.

At approximately 1.8–2.4 minutes per question, practise your pace as well as the material. Spending more than 3 minutes on any single question is a sign you should flag it, move on, and return.

Question Format: What Kind of Questions Are on the Red Seal Exam?

All Red Seal exam questions are four-option multiple choice. Each question presents one correct answer and three plausible distractors. Red Seal's Exam Preparation Guide says textbooks can be helpful study resources, but they are not the basis of the exam; the occupational standard is.

How Topic Weighting Works

The Red Seal exam is divided into topic blocks based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS). Red Seal publishes the exact number of questions in each block on every trade’s exam information page. Knowing the weighting tells you where to focus your study time.

How Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Works

Red Seal's Exam Preparation Guide describes an exam booklet and a bubble sheet for recording answers. Delivery is set by your province or territory, so confirm the format with your apprenticeship authority. If your exam is computer-based, expect roughly the following:

1. Arrival: Arrive at the testing centre 15–30 minutes before your scheduled time. Bring valid government-issued photo ID.
2. Check-in: Your identity is verified. You may be photographed or have your palm/fingerprint scanned. No personal belongings are permitted at the desk.
3. Tutorial: A short computer tutorial explains how to navigate, flag questions, and submit. Take your time with this — it's not timed.
4. Exam starts: Questions appear one at a time. You can flag any question and return to it before the final submission.
5. Flagging strategy: If a question stumps you, flag it, select your best guess, and move on. Return to flagged questions in the last 15–20 minutes.
6. Time warning: The system typically shows your remaining time. Most centres give a warning at 30 and 5 minutes remaining.
7. Submit: After reviewing flagged questions, you confirm your submission. You cannot change answers after submitting.
8. Results: Some provinces provide immediate results on screen. Others deliver results by email or through your provincial apprenticeship portal within 2–5 business days.

What Happens If You Fail the Red Seal Exam?

Failing the Red Seal exam is not the end of the road. Red Seal does not publish pass rates, so treat any figure you see quoted with caution. If you don't pass:

• Waiting period: Skilled Trades Ontario and SkilledTradesBC both require a 30-day wait after a failed attempt; other provinces and territories set their own rules. Use this time productively.
• Score report: SkilledTradesBC's results letter gives your mark on each topic area; check what your own authority's report shows. Use your weakest areas as study targets.
• Retake rules and fees vary: SkilledTradesBC, for example, requires apprentices to submit an approved study plan before a third attempt, and Alberta requires journeypersons and qualification-certificate holders who apply to write the Red Seal exam after two or more attempts to show at least 40 hours of additional study or upgrading. Check your own authority's rules before you rebook.
• Focus your retake prep: If you scored 45% on Hydraulics but 85% on Safety, spend 80% of your study time on hydraulics. Don't waste time on topics you already know.

Red Seal Exam Study Strategy Based on the Format

Knowing the format changes how you should study:

1. Simulate real exam conditions: Take 25–50 question timed mock exams regularly. This builds stamina and time management. Our Mock Exam mode does exactly this.
2. Study by topic block: Use the question counts on your trade's red-seal.ca exam information page to prioritize. A topic worth 20% of the exam deserves 20%+ of your study time.
3. Learn from wrong answers: Every incorrect answer reveals a knowledge gap. Read the explanation, understand the concept, and move on.
4. Don't memorize — understand: "Why does this system work this way?" is more useful than "what is the correct answer to question 47?"
5. Final week: Stop learning new material. Review flagged questions, weak topics, and do 2–3 full mock exams under timed conditions.
