The 306A Plumber Red Seal exam is the interprovincial exam for journeyperson plumbers working in residential, commercial and industrial plumbing systems. Red Seal says the endorsement indicates that a tradesperson has demonstrated the knowledge required for the national standard in that trade; Plumber is designated Red Seal in all ten provinces and three territories, and Red Seal says the endorsement facilitates labour mobility.
The exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) and aligned with the National Plumbing Code of Canada, with a passing score of 70%. Exam time is 4 hours.
Red Seal publishes how the 125 questions on the real 306A exam are distributed across its Major Work Activities:
Every question is four-option multiple choice with one correct answer. Source: 306A exam information, red-seal.ca. The four-hour writing time and the 70% pass mark are published by SkilledTradesBC (time limits, pass mark, checked October 2026); confirm with your own apprenticeship authority. Exams are periodically rewritten to updated occupational standards, so check that page before you book.
These are the topic areas in this practice bank and what each one covers. The real 306A exam has 125 questions and a four-hour writing time. How those questions are distributed across the official blocks is published by Red Seal — see the 306A exam information page.
Know fixture unit sizing. DWV sizing uses the fixture unit method. Know the fixture unit values for common fixtures (WC flush tank=4, lav=1, tub=1.5, kitchen sink=1.5) and the corresponding pipe sizes from the NPC hydraulic-load and pipe-sizing tables.
Study the venting rules. Know when wet venting is permitted, the limits on air admittance valves, and the requirements for dual vents. The NPC's venting rules are in Division B, Section 2.5 (Venting Systems).
Gas piping is a small block. Gas piping sits inside the specialized-systems task (G-21), which Red Seal gives only 4 of 125 questions (checked October 2026). Learn the core sizing and testing rules, but weight your study time by the official counts.
This practice tool includes 130 questions grouped into six topic filters of this site's own (Safety & Tools, DWV Systems, Water Supply, Gas Piping, Fixtures, Code & Inspection), which are not one-to-one with the official Major Work Activities. Every answer comes with a full explanation. Use Topic Filter to drill your weakest areas. Run the Mock Exam to simulate the real 125-question timed format.
