The 310S Automotive Service Technician Red Seal exam is Canada's national certification for technicians who diagnose, repair, and maintain passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks. The trade is designated Red Seal in all ten provinces and three territories, and Red Seal says the endorsement facilitates labour mobility.
The exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), with a passing mark of 70%. You have 4 hours to complete the exam.

Red Seal does not break the 310S exam down by OBD-II topic; it counts questions by task (red-seal.ca). The 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard, which the exam is built on, covers using OBD-II adaptors and scanners to monitor data such as fuel trims, part of Task A-2 (uses tools, equipment and documentation: 5 questions in all), and reading diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), part of Task C-10 (diagnoses vehicle networking systems: 8 questions in all). Task B-6, diagnosing gasoline engine support systems such as fuel delivery and emission controls, has 5 questions.
Red Seal does not publish a pass rate for the 310S exam or rank its sections by difficulty. Its exam information says 40 to 50% of the questions are critical thinking (interpreting data and solving problems), 40 to 50% procedural and application, and 5 to 15% knowledge and recall; the largest blocks are electrical and comfort control systems and steering, suspension and braking (23 questions each).
