The 308A Sheet Metal Worker Red Seal exam is the interprovincial exam for sheet metal tradespeople working in HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation, architectural sheet metal, industrial exhaust systems and commercial building work. Sheet Metal Worker is designated Red Seal in all ten provinces and three territories, and Red Seal says the endorsement facilitates labour mobility.
The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions based on the 2018 Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), which names SMACNA among the trade standards that must be met, with a passing score of 70%.
Upcoming change: Red Seal has published a new Red Seal Occupational Standard for Sheet Metal Worker (2026) and says exams based on it are under development. The breakdown below is for the current exam, which is based on the 2018 standard. The new standard keeps 120 questions but shifts the weightings to common occupational skills 21%, fabrication 28%, air and material handling systems 34%, roofing and specialty products 10% and maintenance and repair 7% (checked September 2026). Check with your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority before you book.
The official Red Seal exam information for Sheet Metal Worker divides the 120 questions across five blocks of Major Work Activities:
Every question is four-option multiple choice with exactly one correct answer, and the pass mark is 70%. By question style, roughly 20–30% test knowledge and recall, 60–70% test procedural and application skills, and 5–15% require critical thinking — so most questions put you in a shop or job-site situation and ask what you would do next, not just what a term means.

The 308A Sheet Metal Worker Red Seal exam has 120 multiple-choice questions. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass. Red Seal's breakdown spreads the questions over five Major Work Activities: installs air and material handling systems (41), performs fabrication (38, of which pattern development is 13), performs common occupational skills (24), installs roofing and specialty products (10), and performs maintenance and repair (7).
Red Seal's 308A exam breakdown (red-seal.ca) makes installing air and material handling systems the largest block, with 41 of the 120 questions; pattern development is its own task (Task B-5, 13 questions, about 11%) within the 38-question fabrication block. The 2018 occupational standard used for the current exam lists pattern development by simple and straight line layout and by the parallel line, radial line and triangulation methods under Task B-5, including determining the true length of lines.
Red Seal's 308A occupational standard (2018, the basis of the current exam) lists SMACNA among the trade standards sheet metal workers apply, alongside ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA and the National Building Code; duct reinforcement types, for example, are identified according to SMACNA and job specifications. SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association) publishes the HVAC Duct Construction Standards – Metal and Flexible, now in its 4th edition. Red Seal's exam breakdown counts questions by task, not by standard.
